Microsoft’s Taking Away My Ice Cream!

I have a theory that you should never give an ice cream to a child and then try to take it back again! Why? Do I really need to explain? No, I didn’t think so!

Well our dear friends at Microsoft don’t seem to know about my Ice Cream Theory and they have just announced that they are going to strip away some of the free OneDrive Storage that they gave us in the past and drop us all back to 5Gb. Backing up a Tablet or a smartphone

backupAhh, you thought you did not have to do a back-up? Well, you should. And not just once a year either.
Backing up your data is not one of the most exhilarating things to do, and for most people not their most desirable task.

But thank goodness, technology to the rescue for it can be done more or less automatically so it won’t take up much of your time.

I have heard the argument that duplicating and storing your data is a waste of time, but protecting your data really is worthwhile for there are only two kinds of computer users: those who have lost data because their machine crashed or those who will, and then your precious photographs, letters, addresses of your contacts and important messages may have gone for good. You could also be infected by some dastardly virus that wipes your data and your system.

From Hotmail to Outlook

It is all but a fait-accompli as Microsoft has completed the move of all Hotmail users to the revamped Outlook web-mail, so if you are entering Hotmail.com in your browser’s address bar you are automatically redirected to Outlook.com.

It has been quite an exercise to move 300 million accounts in the 6 weeks since it started and it wasn’t without a few headaches to the both users and to Microsoft, but given the magnitude of the project and the challenges it presented, plus keeping in touch with hundreds of millions of people affected, one has to say that it went quite well.

All the mailboxes were upgraded [=more than 150 million gigabytes of data], and every person’s mail, calendar, contacts information, folders, personal preferences had to be preserved, and if that wasn’t enough it had to be done with a live site experience that was handling billions of transactions a day.

The Hotmail addresses  – and if you are using mobile access also – these settings still work within Outlook.com, but otherwise it is the end of the now 17 years old Hotmail web service.

Those of you already into Outlook.com will have noted also the deeper integration with SkyDrive and its cloud storage.

Erik will show you how to register for Skydrive yourself and then he will demonstrate some of the ways you can use Skydrive while also explaining the benefits and pitfalls.
