We’ve started Term 3 with a hiss and a roar! Most classes are full or close to it which is always pleasing to the Committee and all our Tutors. It’s great for us to see that our members are finding something in our programme that they can learn and it’s our pleasure to be able to offer the number of classes and workshops that we do.
SeniorNet Kapiti was entered into the Wellington Airport Community Awards, and proudly came away with a Highly Commended award for Education & Child/Youth Development – this is due to the excellent work by our team of volunteers (Committee & Tutors). The nomination described how our Learning Centre moved to online courses and workshops during lockdown to ensure we could engage with our members, and how we now continue that engagement at the Learning Centre.

From the Chair
This will be my first “From the Chair” as it’s my first Chairpersonship, confirmed at the AGM last month. I am very grateful to the Committee who have ‘re-signed up’ for this year and of course to the Immediate Past Chairperson Peter Bunkall, who is member of the incoming Committee. I am truly humbled by the help and assistance that this very experienced team can offer not only me but all of our members too.
I am looking forward to my time as Chairperson – with the current status of COVID-19, I believe we have the policies in place to act accordingly in everyone’s best interest and our members health is ‘front and centre’ for each of us. At times, things will be complicated and challenging but the team I have around me, supporting the ‘Chair’ are an amazing group of people.
I genuinely would like to thank the Committee for what we are about to do together and what we have achieved in the past.
This will be my last “From the Chair” as my ChairPersonship will end at the AGM later this month. An amendment to our Constitution in 2012 restricts the term of every ChairPerson to a maximum of two consecutive years. As Immediate Past ChairPerson I am automatically a member of the incoming Committee and I will be there to assist the new ChairPerson in every way I can.
I have enjoyed my time as ChairPerson despite earning the label of “COVID-19 Chair”. At times, things have been complicated and challenging but throughout my time at the helm, I’ve been supported by an amazing group of people on the Committee. Each one of them has accepted the roles I have asked them to fulfil and they have all undertaken those roles in the best interests of SeniorNet Kapiti – our organisation is the better for their efforts and I publicly thank each and every Committee member for their support in the past 2 years.

SeniorNet Kapiti is in good heart as we head into the cooler months of winter – and our new aircon is working VERY well indeed!
Peter Jones and I attended the recent SeniorNet Federation AGM and Symposium in Dunedin. It was a well run affair with lots of interesting topics to discuss and lots of guest speakers to update us on everything from the technology inside Suzuki’s cars to the ethical issues surrounding AI (artificial intelligence). Peter J was our voting participant and has written a summary of proceedings below.
Term 1 is fast drawing to a close and I must say, it’s been a busy one at SeniorNet Kapiti. Most of our classes and workshops have been full or close to it and for me that’s a sign of a healthy organisation. It’s obvious members are still seeking out our training and assistance and of course that’s what SeniorNet is all about. Thank you for your continued support.
By now, most members will have received their annual membership renewal. To those who have already renewed, we appreciate your quick payment. If you haven’t done so, remember there’s a $5 discount if you pay by the end of April. If you are an AMI Insurance customer and you’ve already advised us, you won’t have received a renewal notice. AMI is paying your membership for 2021-22 and we’ve already flagged you as “paid”!
