I hope you all had lots of relaxing time over the summer break. By the time you read this, Term 1 will be in full swing at SeniorNet with several courses and workshops already completed. Our Open Days were very successful and we have a number of new members joining us this year – many of whom we’ve already seen at the Learning Centre. Our Tutors are also all rested and rejuvenated, keen to share their IT knowledge with you in the friendly, low-stress learning environment we call SeniorNet Kapiti.

2020 Where to?

12 months ago I wrote about the likely transformation in the transportation industry, i.e. autonomous and electric vehicles, robotics and AI, also the Internet of Things, fitness trackers and voice interaction with our devices.

All good stuff if you can keep up with it, but at the speed at which we are supposed to absorb, understand the consequences of, and the implementation of, the new technology is daunting.

What is this 5G all about?

Now that Vodafone has announced availability of 5G by the end of the year what exactly does that mean for you and me?

If you are a Vodafone service subscriber and live at Kapiti the first thing you may think about is the newly installed fibre connection, but alas, it has nothing to do with that as you don’t need fibre to get 5G, instead your need a 5G capable device like a smartphone or tablet or gaming computer to take advantage of this new wireless technology when it is ready.

Serious Security Flaw

Check the version of Chrome Browser you may be using and if the version you are using is NOT 72.0.3626.121 please update your browser straight away.

Google found a serious flaw and indicates that Chrome users should update their browser as soon as possible. At the same time they are not saying what exactly the security patch is fixing but may do so later when most users have updated.
