Windows 10 is Evolving – Please Keep Up!

Windows 10 is, by design, an evolving Operating System. According to Microsoft, there will never be a Windows 11, just a continuously changing Windows 10.

In reality, what does this mean for you, as a humble PC/Laptop user? Well, the most obvious thing is that you will see small incremental changes occurring as the regular updates are applied. In fact, Microsoft have stated that they will update Windows 10 every 6 months and while there have been a couple of hiccups along the way, they have generally remained on their own self-imposed schedule in recent years. March and September are the “big” months to watch out for.

The current version of Windows 10 (at the time of writing in April 2019) is “1809”. The version designation is simply the year (YY) and month (MM) when the update was initially released. Those of you who are quick with the maths, will already be asking “then where’s v1903?” and you are right to pose the question. Sadly, I don’t know the answer right now but what I do know if that it won’t be far away!

It is important that you keep up to date with these ongoing updates. Continue reading

eMail from Google about Google+

This is a quick message to all our members who have @gmail addresses….

You’ve probably received a message this week from Google telling you that your Google+ Account is being closed soon and wondered what it’s all about.

Long story short…when you signed up for your Google email address you were also allocated a Google+ Account (it’s like Facebook but it lost the “war”). Google have now decided to close the entire Google+ “Ecosystem” down and they are just letting you know before they delete everything.

Your xxx.yyy@gmail email address WILL NOT BE AFFECTED

We wrote about the demise of Google+ a couple of months ago in this article

If you never ever posted anything to Google+ (and most of you won’t have), then you don’t have to do anything.

If you did post to Google+ and want to keep any of the content, then you need to get on over there now and extract the bits you want to keep and store them elsewhere. Otherwise, DO NOTHING works for you too!

They’re at it Again!

This is a very short post because I’ve said it all before…

If you get the following message in an email from Google, please click here and read the article I posted back in February. Nothing has changed!

Our recommendation remains the same….if you have a Gmail account and use either Windows Live Mail, MS Outlook or Thunderbird, DO NOT CHANGE THIS SETTING.

Sadly you can’t stop these unnecessary and irritating messages from Google. Just delete the email.

Google’s Less Secure Apps Setting

This message is for everyone who is using Microsoft Outlook or Windows Live Mail
(or Thunderbird) together with their Gmail Account.

You have probably received a message from Google (no-reply@accounts.google.com) in recent days. If you have, this is important so please read on…

The message subject is Resolve One Security Issues Found on your Google Account Continue reading

Microsoft Don’t Make Phone Calls!

It’s 6:35pm on a normal weekday evening on the Kapiti Coast, dinner’s almost ready to serve and…….the phone rings. You pick it up and there doesn’t appear to be anyone on the other end. Suddenly after about 5 seconds a foreign voice comes on the line and quickly introduces themselves as “Microsoft Support”. They tell you that they’ve detected a problem on your computer and they want to connect to it and remedy the issue.

Does this all sound familiar – it should, because almost all of us will have encountered this targeted scam in the past few months – sometimes repeatedly! Continue reading
