Newsletter March 2023

From Sue

Hello everyone,

SeniorNet Kapiti, Term 2 Timetable

Check out SeniorNet Kapiti Term 2 timetable. Where did those first three months go! Now is the time to catch a few classes during autumn from the offerings of courses or workshops that you would like to include into your new skill set. Please see more below…

We are saying “Goodbye” to Elaine our Enrolment Coordinator

We wish Elaine a fond farewell this week! Elaine has been an excellent Enrolment Coordinator at SeniorNet Kapiti for a number of years. Elaine’s contribution has been second to none and she has been a fantastic help in other areas of SeniorNet too.

Elaine, we say a fond farewell (Haere rā or Totsiens) and we will miss you dearly.

To Elaine I say, enjoy the move and it’s all about attitude and you have that in bucket loads

SeniorNet Kapiti Census Help

We had three 2 hour sessions at the Paraparaumu Library, Wednesday 1 March, Thursday 2 March and Friday 3 March. We also held two sessions at the Learning Centre and helped people over the five days.

Icons on Smartphones – did you know?

Try this on your smartphone, what happens when you hold your finger on an icon? This will be slightly different on an Android Smartphone compared to the Apple iPhone.

For instance some apps, e.g; the calculator, when you hold your finger on the icon the options select, copy last result, edit home screen or remove app are shown. Other apps may show similar options. If you hold your finger on the email app, different options appear.

On my text app, holding the app icon shows me the last three people I have sent or received a text from, new conversation, as well as ‘select’, ‘remove’ or ‘disable’. In all cases, if the icon is not required, just touch any clear area of the screen. Try holding an icon and see what options appear for you to use and select. Remember, these short cuts are there to be used for your convenience.

SeniorNet Kapiti and the 2023 Census

CENSUS

I’d like to thank our tutors who helped deliver the Census service to the community.

It now appears that if you have not yet had the opportunity to complete a Census form, you can still complete one. If you require any assistance please get in touch with Census 0800 236 787 or SeniorNet Kapiti and we will assist.

SeniorNet Kapiti, are reviewing how we can be of assistance to the community

There are many areas where we can partner with other organisations to be of service to the community, and we are keen to help out further in that area.

SeniorNet Kapiti has ongoing community support from Paraparaumu Library and Westpac (one of our sponsors). In particular, we are looking at various technology items that the Library ‘loans’ out to organisations. Westpac are interested in offering sessions on scams and banking to assist with the overall experience for our members. We are looking at dates and the opportunity to bring these sessions to the Learning Centre in the near future.

SCAMS – the Little Black Book

At SeniorNet Kapiti we are hearing of an upsurge in scams. Our members tell us they are coming via phone calls, text, emails and even door to door! This book will give you information to help identify scams and to help you stay safe. You can also contact, CertNZ or Netsafe to help you with further information.

The Little Black Book of Scams

Sorted is a free service by Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission, the government-funded, independent agency dedicated to helping New Zealanders.

It’s also a great way to update your skills at SeniorNet Kapiti as tutors will help you along the way.

Happy Learning!

Please Support our Sponsors

Please don’t forget to support our National sponsors – they’re important to SeniorNet and help us at the local level in many ways, including offering discounts to our members.

Always show your membership card and ask if there’s a discount for SeniorNet members – you might be rather surprised!

The best example is Noel Leeming where the SeniorNet discount extends well beyond computers to everything in their store but please be insistent that they scan your barcode before they give you a price!

Suzuki has recently reconfirmed their offer to our members of free on-road costs on new vehicles so it always pays to ask.

There are more details about the individual sponsorships on the Federation’s website here
