Newsletter December 2022

From Sue

Hello everyone,

This will be SeniorNet Kapiti’s last Newsletter for 2022

We wish you and your family a happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year. We hope to see you again at the Learning Centre in Raumati. Let’s ‘ring in’ the New Year together by putting some new skills into our tool box.

The best way to do that would be to have a look at the Term 1 timetable, for 2023!

SeniorNet Kapiti, Term 1 Timetable

Check out SeniorNet Kapiti Term 1 timetable, for 2023!. Why not catch a few classes from the offerings of courses or workshops that you would like to include during the New Year. Please see more below…

At SeniorNet Kapiti we enjoy sharing our technical knowledge and helping out generally. We believe that we all learn something new each day, so come along and join the SeniorNet Kapiti volunteer team.

Members ‘Xmas Function’, held on Wednesday 7 December

SeniorNet Kapiti welcomed members and friends to the Christmas function on Wednesday afternoon.

There was plenty of food and drink to go around. The feeling at the function was one of fun, cheer and chatter especially when Peter and Chris Bunkall (former Chairperson) made a surprise visit 😊 It was great to see you both, and thanks for visiting us at the Christmas function.

All spot prizes were won or (re-drawn) to ensure that all gifts were ‘won on the day’, with lots of cheering and laughter after the WIN!

A big thank you to our Committee and Tutors with their great ideas and enthusiasm make these functions enjoyable.

SeniorNet Kapiti, are reviewing how we can be of assistance to the community

There are many areas where we can partner with other organisations to be of service to the community, and we are keen to help out further in that area.

Amongst some of the initiatives being assessed by the SeniorNet Federation, is the possibility that SeniorNet’s around the country will be able to assist in the 2023 Census – currently a Memorandum of Understanding is being discussed for agreement. We will let everyone know once this has been confirmed and signed.

Welcome back to David Coplon, a SeniorNet Kapiti Tutor, who arrives back to NZ in early January

SeniorNet Kapiti, are pleased to welcome David back to the Tutor team here at the Learning Centre. I’m sure David will share some of his interesting travel experiences when you see him next at the Learning Centre.

Microsoft – For your Information

This DOESN’T mean OneDrive is going away, it just means it won’t be supported on the “old” Apple (iPhone and iPad) version 14. Do get in touch with SeniorNet Kapiti in the New Year, if you need further information or help.

Remember, at this time of the year it’s good to get your ‘chats’ setup with family so that you don’t miss out! If you’re not sure how to set up an online chat, or Facetime (iPad/iPhone) or WhatsApp (iPhone & Android), just let SeniorNet Kapiti know, and we will help get you connected.

Windows 11 22H2 – Windows 11 Update

In early November Microsoft released an update 22H2 to Windows 11. This update has been staged over several weeks, you will almost certainly find that the update process comes in several steps. Get in touch with SeniorNet Kapiti in the New Year, if you need further help.

How do I find out if I have the latest version of Windows, see below;

  • Find the ‘Search’ field on your task bar
  • Type ‘winver’ in the searh field and press enter.
  • A dialogue box will pop up with the current Windows version.

Rows in Pinned Area: In Settings>Personalisation>Start item in the settings App you can now choose to have ‘More pins’ (4rows), Default (3 rows) or ‘More Recommendations’ (2 rows) of App short cuts on the start window.

We are Looking for an Enrolment Coordinator !

Do you enjoy organising? We will soon need an Enrolment Coordinator as Elaine, our current Coordinator, is off overseas in the New Year. Elaine will be hugely missed by the team here at SeniorNet Kapiti.

Do you think you’ll enjoy the role of Enrolment Coordinator? It will mean taking calls (a smartphone is provided) from members who wish to enroll onto a course or workshop. I’m sure this will suit someone who has an interest in people and helping them to get the best out of their learning experience. It’s also a great way to “give back” to SeniorNet.

Cleaner required for SeniorNet Kapiti Learning Centre

Please contact SeniorNet Kapiti, on (04) 299 0754 about the above role and payment details. The Learning Centre is at 200 Matai Road, Raumati Beach.

We’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in any of the above roles. Please don’t be shy, get in touch with SeniorNet Kapiti to tell us more about yourself, and how you would like to help. You can call the office on (04) 299 0754 and leave a message – Sue will contact you for a chat.

Open Days – are scheduled in the New Year, Coastlands and one at the Learning Centre

COASTLANDS

SeniorNet Kapiti will be holding an Open Day at Coastlands Mall on 31 January 2023.

This Open Day is being held for existing Members. This will help members to see how we put courses and workshop schedules together, as well as answer any questions you may have.

Term 1 Courses and Workshops

SeniorNet Kapiti Term 1 ; book your next course or workshop now? Ensure you don’t miss out on your next opportunity to do something different. Please call or text Elaine on 021 169 6256 to book your place on a course or workshop.

Please also call Elaine on 021 169 6256 if you are unable to attend a class that you have booked. It’s difficult to tell people that courses or workshops are fully booked, only to find out that someone hasn’t come along. So please let us know.

Happy Learning!

Please Support our Sponsors

Please don’t forget to support our National sponsors – they’re important to SeniorNet and help us at the local level in many ways, including offering discounts to our members.

Always show your membership card and ask if there’s a discount for SeniorNet members – you might be rather surprised!

The best example is Noel Leeming where the SeniorNet discount extends well beyond computers to everything in their store but please be insistent that they scan your barcode before they give you a price!

Suzuki has recently reconfirmed their offer to our members of free on-road costs on new vehicles so it always pays to ask.

There are more details about the individual sponsorships on the Federation’s website here
