From the Chair
SeniorNet Kapiti is unable to re-open the Learning Centre until the Wellington region is at Level 1, this is due to the tighter restrictions around Covid-19 Delta variant.
We have Zoom sessions for you to join during the coming week – we’ll drop you an email a day or so before each one starts.
At SeniorNet we would be very interested to know if you would like a specific subject covered at a Zoom session, so just call the office on (04) 299 0754 and leave a message. Our tutors have an enormous breadth of skills so I’m sure we can organise something.
Technology is giving us all the opportunity to meet with friends and family and also to learn from home, so please take the time to join a Zoom session and pick up some tips and tricks.
Please also remember that if you get into difficulty with your technology, SeniorNet can help. Call our COVID Helpdesk on (04) 299 0754, leave your name, number and a brief description of the problem and one of our capable tutors will call you back to assist.
Chair, SeniorNet Kapiti Inc.
Kapiti SeniorNet Learning Centre
(200 Matai Rd) remains closed while we are in COVID-19 Level 2. We will reopen as soon as we reach Level 1

Classes for Term 4
Term 3 has pretty much turned to custard! COVID-19 Level 1 will trigger a resumption of face to face classes but at this stage we aren’t optimistic about getting back into the Learning Centre before the school holidays.
So, we’ve started planning for Term 4! Our current draft timetable assumes that most of the classes which were suspended in Term 3 will restart for those already enrolled. We have also allowed extra space at the end of the main classes in case we are a week or two late getting restarted.
Click here to see our current Term 4 Planning Timetable. If you are interested in any of these courses, please contact Elaine on 021 169 6256 as soon as possible and get your name on the list.
A new Brand for the SeniorNet Federation (and us)
The more observant of our members may have noticed a change in branding on our website and specifically the use of a brand new SeniorNet Logo. Gone is the old swooshy wave and in comes the tree with its new tag-line “Confidently connecting with technology”. You may also notice that the trunk of the tree is made from the symbol for a USB Stick.
Guidelines have been issued to all Learning Centres so you can expect the new branding to slowly appear around our Learning Centre as we use up old brochures and posters. We hope you like the new, modern look.
Are you being pestered by iTop VPN Software?
A number of our members have reported the appearance of a small thin image on their desktops called iTop VPN. Alternatively, a larger popup screen tells you that your IP Address is compromised (just close the popup!)
Regrettably, this software has been accidently installed during the latest update of SmartDefrag – freeware which we recommend our Windows users utilise for hard drive defragmentation. iTop VPN slipped past you during the install and now appears on your desktop uninvited! iTop VPN appears to be harmless but most people won’t want it with its annoying popups.
For assistance to remove iTop VPN, you are welcome to contact our COVID-19 Helpdesk at (04) 299 0754, leave your name and number and one of our tutors will call back to assist (remotely).
If you’re feeling brave, it’s very easy to remove iTop VPN.
- Start Control Panel: Locate the Search Bar (or magnifying glass) in your Taskbar
- Type CONTROL PANEL into the Search bar and press enter
- Choose the PROGRAMS and FEATURES option
(or, Category view, PROGRAMS, PROGRAMS & FEATURES)
- Locate iTop VPN in the list presented and click it once
- Click the uninstall option at the top of the list and follow the simple instructions
- Close the PROGRAMS & FEATURES window
SeniorHangouts is Still Running – every day
SeniorHangouts, the online learning platform run by SeniorNet, is still operating (with fancy new branding too!
All current members of SeniorNet Learning Centres in New Zealand are welcome to participate (free) and you don’t even need Zoom to join.
Go to the SeniorHangouts website, join up (it’s free) and see what sessions are coming up. You can also watch previously held sessions on a wide variety of topics that may interest you
If you are interesting in what’s coming up next week (and every week), we’ve found this excellent site (thanks to SeniorNet Manawatu) which is updated Sunday evening once the weekly timetable is published. It also includes direct links to the upcoming sessions – just click and go!
Elizabeth East has shared this incredible video with us demonstrating how far technology has come in assisting visually impaired people to interact with the world around them. I hope you find it as fascinating and inspiring as we did. Click the play button in the centre of the video below to start playing and make sure you have your sound turned on/up
Please Support our Sponsors
Please don’t forget to support our National sponsors – they’re important to SeniorNet and help us at the local level in many ways, including offering discounts to our members.
Always show your membership card and ask if there’s a discount for SeniorNet members – you might be rather surprised!
The best example is Noel Leeming where the SeniorNet discount extends well beyond computers to everything in their store but please be insistent that they scan your barcode before they give you a price!
Suzuki has recently reconfirmed their offer to our members of free on-road costs on new vehicles so it always pays to ask.
There are more details about the individual sponsorships on the Federation’s website here
