Newsletter April 2021

From the Chair

Term 1 is fast drawing to a close and I must say, it’s been a busy one at SeniorNet Kapiti. Most of our classes and workshops have been full or close to it and for me that’s a sign of a healthy organisation. It’s obvious members are still seeking out our training and assistance and of course that’s what SeniorNet is all about. Thank you for your continued support.

By now, most members will have received their annual membership renewal. To those who have already renewed, we appreciate your quick payment. If you haven’t done so, remember there’s a $5 discount if you pay by the end of April. If you are an AMI Insurance customer and you’ve already advised us, you won’t have received a renewal notice. AMI is paying your membership for 2021-22 and we’ve already flagged you as “paid”!

Sadly, we can no longer accept cheques as our bank won’t cash them! Please take advantage of Internet Banking or you can bring cash/EFTPOS along to The Learning Centre whenever we are open (but please don’t interrupt classes)

Our Term 2 Timetable has just been loaded onto our website (see the links below) and given the recent popularity of our courses and workshops, it might be wise to contact Elaine sooner rather than leaving it for later. If you’re already waitlisted, Elaine will contact you shortly and confirm your attendance at your chosen Term 2 session….and don’t forget the How Do I…? Workshops which are held every 3 weeks or so where you can get one-on-one assistance with almost any technical problem.

As we move into April, the new financial year has already begun. This means Teresa, our Treasurer, is busy finalising the accounts for 2020-21 in preparation for the up-coming AGM. Please make a note in your diary for Wednesday 23 June at 1:30pm – your attendance at the AGM is an important part of the governance of SeniorNet Kapiti so please plan ahead and make time to come along. There will be a guest speaker after the AGM and afternoon tea as well.

In the meantime, enjoy the upcoming school holiday break – this often means our members get extra, quality time with their grandchildren and with the travel bubble opening up, maybe some travel at last.

I look forward to seeing you at The Learning Centre in Term 2.

Peter Bunkall
Chair, SeniorNet Kapiti Inc.

We Have New Contact Details!

For some time we’ve been wondering why our website and email address used “.co.nz“. We’re not a business or company and the use of the “.co” part was at odds with our goals and charitable status. So, when The SeniorNet Federation came to the same conclusion and decided to change to “.nz“, we jumped on for the ride.

With immediate effect, our email address has changed to kapiti@seniornet.nz and our website url has also changed to kapiti.seniornet.nz.
But don’t worry if you get it wrong because our old addresses have been set to point to the new ones permanently! We do however recommend changing your Contacts List for our new email address and your browser Favourites (Bookmarks) for our new website address. If you’re not sure how to achieve either of these, why not come along to a How Do I…? Workshop and one of our tutors can show you how.

Coming Up – Term 2!

From Our Membership Coordinator (Veronica)

Late in March an email/letter was sent to all (unpaid & non-AMI customer) Members of SeniorNet advising that it is the beginning of the new financial year and subscriptions are due.

Thank you for the flood of subscription payments in the first 24 hours following that email/letter – 33 on day 1 and more over the next couple of days! Did you all think I had nothing better to do over Easter? Yes, part of Easter was spent processing those subs, but hey what better way could you spend a wettish, windy day? Well I can think of other ways but thanks to everyone who paid so promptly – your new cards are in the post. Now it’s up to the Posties to decide when they will deliver them – good luck.

On a less positive but none the less bright note, I had 2 resignation emails which I will share with you (Anonymously)

Dear V
Thanks for the email. Unfortunately I will have to resign from membership of SeniorNet. I can’t thank you enough for the help you have given me over the years, especially to get up and running.
I constantly recommend you to people and many have benefited as much as I have done.
All the best to you all, Cheers JP

Dear V
Sadly, at 95 I must resign. Far too old to travel to ‘School’!
Have loved my time and learned a lot, so thanks and all the best for your future.

A wonderful organisation. KB

For those yet to pay, don’t forget the $5 discount for paying before the end of this month. The School Holidays are coming up next week so I will have plenty of time to process them!

Cheers, Veronica Kemp,
Membership Coordinator

Please Support our Sponsors

Please don’t forget to support our National sponsors – they’re important to SeniorNet and help us at the local level in many ways, including offering discounts to our members.

Always show your membership card and ask if there’s a discount for SeniorNet members – you might be rather surprised!

The best example is Noel Leeming where the SeniorNet discount extends well beyond computers to everything in their store!

Suzuki has recently reconfirmed their offer to our members of free on-road costs on new vehicles so it always pays to ask.

There are more details about the individual sponsorships on the Federation’s website here
