New Members – Welcome!

Welcome to our 14 new members who joined during our recent Open Days – this brings our total membership to 285.

EFTPOS Machine

FINALLY we have an EFTPOS machine available for payment of course and workshop fees, membership (renewal) and donations. Please take advantage of this convenient payment method. We can accept both EFTPOS and Credit Card payments, However, due to the extra charges levied by the bank on us, if you want to use your Credit Card, we must add a $1 surcharge to the payment.

The Automated External Defibrillator we mentioned earlier in the year has been  installed on the front wall of the Arts and Crafts building. Our HUGE thanks go out to the sponsors who generously helped us fund this live-saving device – Pelorus Trust, Kapiti Lions, Kapiti Rotary and the many SeniorNet Kapiti members who helped with this project.

The AED is securely installed and available to the public 24/7. To use it, dial 111, tell Emergency Services the location of the AED and they will tell you the access PIN number.

St. John will be demonstrating the use of the AED to our Tutors in the near future.

Donations

SeniorNet kapiti Inc is a Registered Charity which involves us in some complex annual reporting to the Charities Commission. On the upside though, we’d like to remind all members that if you make donation to SeniorNet you can apply for a tax rebate – just make sure you ask us for a receipt to include with your Tax Return. Membership fees do not of course qualify but individual donations do. For more information click here

Newsletter Editor Wanted!

HELP! We urgently need a Newsletter Editor. Your committee is a couple of people short this year and we are all rather busy. We would really appreciate some help in this area and full training will be given. Contact Bazza if you are interested to discuss what’s needed rosebb@xtra.co.nz

Equipment Disposals

From time to time, we have a cleanout of our storeroom and we discover all sorts of cool technology!! Peter Jones (our technical Officer) has just done that and he’s found two projectors, two colour laserjet printers a scanner, a portable housephone and some very high quality speakers. Message from the Chair

It seems ages since I was asked to put fingers to keyboard for a newsletter! It has indeed been a few months since we caught up with our members in a Newsletter but that doesn’t mean the Committee have all been on holiday! Most of us have had some time away but a number of important milestones have still been achieved in our absence.

I want to publicly thank Barry Bailey for his significant efforts to get the new 24/7 AED (Defibrillator) funded, sorted out, installed and commissioned. There’s a closeup picture of it in the article above and we can all be very proud that SeniorNet Kapiti made this happen. It’s true that we are just one of the numerous logos on the backboard but without us, it would never have become a reality. The irony, of course, is that we now all hope that it never needs to be used…but if it does, we may be ultimately responsible for saving someone’s life.

Our sincere thanks also go to The Pelorous Trust and Lions Club of Kapiti, the two major financial sponsors of the AED. Without their generosity and support this couldn’t have happened. Thanks also to the Kapiti Arts and Crafts Society for allowing the AED to be installed in a prominent position on their building and to those members of SeniorNet Kapiti who made personal donations towards this new community facility.

If you have a smartphone (and most of you do!), I highly recommend the free AED App which allows you to quickly locate the nearest AED in an emergency. If you have an iphone or ipad, click here and if you have any other type of phone or tablet, click here. Like the AED itself, being prepared is half the battle and you may help save a life in an emergency by using the technology in your pocket.

The other major announcement (also above) is the availability of EFTPOS for payment of Course and Workshop fees as well as Membership related costs. My thanks to Teresa, our Treasurer, for getting this sorted out. Your Committee has been debating this for several years and finally we’ve found a cost-effective solution that will work for us. Our primary objective in introducing EFTPOS is to make our member’s experience with SeniorNet easier and more convenient so please take advantage of the facility next time you come to a course or workshop. Of course cash, cheques and direct bank transfer are all still available payment options.

Finally, please check out the courses and workshops we have on offer this Term and get on the phone to Elaine and make your bookings early. Last Term we had to defer a number of people due to full classes so don’t delay!
