Computers – should we turn them “On/Off”

So what is best – leave your computer on all the time or turn it off when you’re not using it? And what about your printer and modem; should you be turning them off?

It turns out that you can leave your computer on all day, but make sure it ‘goes to sleep’ after 10 minutes or so, if not using it. That way you’ll use minimum power for maximum use/convenience. Turn it off at night; that way you’ll save some power and give the computer a chance to restart clean in the morning. Your printer and modem?  Might as well leave them on, as they draw hardly any power, and it won’t hurt them.

The rewards of SeniorNet membership

Over the past 10 years as a member of Kapiti SeniorNet, I have come to recognise the many benefits I have enjoyed. As a Tutor, I have had the satisfaction of seeing students have their ‘eureka’ moments when they begin to make the technology work for them and I appreciate the large amount of voluntary time the 30 Tutors and 13 Committee members donate to make us a strong 350 member organization.

Membership and involvement in taking part in the many workshops as well as continuous learning at the various courses keeps the ‘brain cells’ working effectively. I maintain that every time I attend a SeniorNet session, I always come away having learned something new. Making new friends at classes adds to the social interaction amongst members.

Our age group is privileged to be part of the Information Technology age which enable us to source information about any subject and of course, ensures that we keep up do date with our families wherever they are.

Value YOURSELF

Why is everyone younger than us so obsessed with a person’s age? Why is it that when we grow old our confidence is not the same?

For most of us, moving from the workforce into retirement is an enormous lifestyle change. The transition from work to home can make it easy to lose our sense of value. Growing old is yet another challenge that affects our confidence and how we feel about ourselves. Our families love us dearly but to them we are old. They worry about us and want to do things for us and sometimes it’s easier to let them.  Government and private organisations formed for the older generation focus on our physical needs for the future and continue to come up with “new” ideas which we often recognise as reinventing the wheel.

As this quote from Mark Twain says:

“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of coloured glass that have been in use through all the ages.”

With this quote in mind, take a moment out of your day (particularly if it’s been a challenging one) and think about the old pieces of coloured glass that you have used to achieve and learn with over your lifetime. This is your value and with it came wisdom. Don’t let anyone else underestimate them.

Next time you are in a group of your peers challenge some of them to move out of their comfort zone, try something new, interact with people outside their generation and be confident sharing their knowledge and wisdom.

And last but by no means the least, if you ever do become overwhelmed by new technology and feel unsure discussing it with a knowledgeable young person just remind yourself of this, young people know how to run fast but old people know the way. Take one step at a time at your own pace.

Wicked Biscuits – Ian B’s Recipe

Melt together 125gm butter and ¾ cups brown sugar

Mix in a packet of crushed malt or wine biscuits.

Press firmly into oiled and baking paper lined slice tin. Use a standard or largish size tin as you don’t want this layer to be too thick.

Top with, in this order –

  • ½ cup fruit (raisins or cranberries or whatever)
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup chopped apricots
  • ½ cup coconut threads
  • ¾ cup sliced almonds

Drizzle over 1 tin condensed milk

Bake 45 minutes @ 150 degrees, probably needing foil over in the last 15 minutes to stop burning
