A few spots are left in the Introduction to Computers course starting Mon. 23^rd November 9.30 – 12.00 ring Teresa 04 298 3132 to register. This is a free course. A good opportunity to brush up on your skills before Christmas. An extra Managing the Data on your PC course will happen in the first term of the New Year so once again contact Teresa as this course fills fast.

iMac

Coming up in the New Year….

Are you an Apple iMac user? Or do you need a refresher course to help with your understanding of the basics? If this sounds like you then our “Basics of an iMac” Special Interest Group that is planned for the New Year is the one for you!

Additionally if you are an iMac user and would like to share with us, prior to the “Basics of iMac” workshop, some of the challenges you encountered as a beginner, contact Shona Spicer – smetspicer@gmail.com . The key word is “basics”. We want “real life” practical information that will help us ensure the workshop content is interesting and useful to those who have launched into an iMac world.

Windows 10 Upgrade

Well, Windows 10 has been “in the wild” for almost 4 months now and we have had plenty of time to observe the effectiveness of the upgrade process. In addition, we have upgraded all the computers in The Learning Centre to Windows 10 without incident so we can now offer our members Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 to use during our courses.

We are therefore comfortable to advise our members that it appears to be safe to proceed with the Windows 10 Upgrade being pushed onto your PCs by Microsoft. As an aside, Windows 10 is an impressive improvement on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and contains the best features of both these older operating systems.

There is one caveat to our recommendation though. We have heard reports that some people who earlier upgraded their computers from Vista to Windows 7 are having issues with the subsequent upgrade to Windows 10. If you fall into this category PLEASE make sure you back up all your data before starting the upgrade.

Here’s what you may have experienced: you received an email from the POP3 ISP. You opened this email and read it. At a later time, you went back to that email, with the idea of re-reading it, or maybe even replying to it. You found the email in your Inbox as before. You could see who sent it, and when, the subject line, and the first few words of the email. You tapped on it, expecting it to open. You are already on our website and if you aren’t already following us (and a lot of our members already are) you will see a FOLLOW button down on the bottom right-hand side of the web page.
