Coming up in the New Year….

Are you an Apple iMac user? Or do you need a refresher course to help with your understanding of the basics? If this sounds like you then our “Basics of an iMac” Special Interest Group that is planned for the New Year is the one for you!

Additionally if you are an iMac user and would like to share with us, prior to the “Basics of iMac” workshop, some of the challenges you encountered as a beginner, contact Shona Spicer – . The key word is “basics”. We want “real life” practical information that will help us ensure the workshop content is interesting and useful to those who have launched into an iMac world.

Windows 10 Upgrade

Well, Windows 10 has been “in the wild” for almost 4 months now and we have had plenty of time to observe the effectiveness of the upgrade process. In addition, we have upgraded all the computers in The Learning Centre to Windows 10 without incident so we can now offer our members Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 to use during our courses.

We are therefore comfortable to advise our members that it appears to be safe to proceed with the Windows 10 Upgrade being pushed onto your PCs by Microsoft. As an aside, Windows 10 is an impressive improvement on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and contains the best features of both these older operating systems.

There is one caveat to our recommendation though. We have heard reports that some people who earlier upgraded their computers from Vista to Windows 7 are having issues with the subsequent upgrade to Windows 10. If you fall into this category PLEASE make sure you back up all your data before starting the upgrade.

If you are keen to proceed, please read the article on our website here – it contains an overview of the upgrade process.

If you’re still not confident after reading the article, we will be holding Windows 10 Introduction Courses in the New Year where you can see the Upgrade Process for yourself and get some hands-on practice with Windows 10 on our Learning Centre PCs.

  • One of your email ISPs uses POP3 e.g. or
  • You have an iPad or iPhone, running software updated to IOS 9 or 9.1.
  • You collect emails on the iOS device
  • You have suffered the case of the disappearing email.

Here’s what you may have experienced: you received an email from the POP3 ISP. You opened this email and read it.  At a later time, you went back to that email, with the idea of re-reading it, or maybe even replying to it.  You found the email in your Inbox as before. You could see who sent it, and when, the subject line, and the first few words of the email. You tapped on it, expecting it to open. It did, but instead of the content of the email you found the words This message has not been downloaded from the server.

A big welcome to our three new tutors. Jan Ward, Bernard McManus and Graham MacLean. Still thinking of becoming a tutor then contact Kuini at or come along to the next Tutors Workshop on 3rd December at 9:30am.

Our Website – Keeping in Touch

Have you ever noticed that we don’t always publish the full content of our articles in the Newsletter and often encourage you to go to our website for more details? We do that, in part, to keep the Newsletter content short so you can read it in a single sitting. We also publish a lot of other interesting articles and information on our website and if you want to be kept up to date with what’s being talked about at SeniorNet, you should “Follow” us. Here’s how it’s done…

You are already on our website and if you aren’t already following us (and a lot of our members already are) you will see a FOLLOW button down on the bottom right-hand side of the web page.

Click the button and this larger window will pop up. Simply enter your email address and click Sign me up. After that you will receive an email from us whenever we add content.

Please note that your email address is kept strictly confidential and is NEVER shared with anyone else or passed to any other entity.
